Land clearance is the process of removing native vegetation and habitats from a location. In this process, native bushlands, woodlands, grasslands, forests, savannah and other kinds of vegetation are removed on a massive scale. The process also involves the draining of natural wetlands. This process is done for many reasons, but most commonly, it is done so that the land can be put to agricultural use, urban development, or other forms of land use.

Land clearing is a process that has been happening in many places in the world. One good example is Australia in which over thirteen percent of all native vegetation has been cleared. The process has been taking process over a long period since European settlement started. The activity has been engaged in even more seriously in the US. The United States has many companies that offer land clearance services to individual, organizational, and governmental clients anywhere in the world. Thus, when looking for a firm that has existed in this industry for long to do land clearing Columbia SC should be the place to visit.

There are many reasons why land may need to be cleared. One of the major reasons is so that the parcel cleared can be placed under agricultural use. Lands that contain vegetation often receive adequate amounts of rainfall annually and they have very fertile soils. This makes them very viable for agricultural production.

According to history, many Commonwealth and State Governments have been in support of lands being cleared to allow agricultural activities to continue. This was viewed as being essential for national economic prosperity. The cleared lands can allow for raising of domestic animals and planting of crops on a large scale. Usually, the agricultural activity that is undertaken on the lands is for commercial purposes.

Although cleared lands create room for urban development and farming, the process also cause several negative effects on the environment. First, it eliminates food sources on which many wild animal species rely on besides destroying their local ecosystems. Secondly, weeds and invasive animals invade and spread in neighboring regions. Also, there is an adverse impact on greenhouse gas emission.

Removal of natural vegetation causes soil erosion because the land is left bare and naked. The removal also inhibits the re-establishment of vegetation and other kinds of biota. Nutrients in the soil come from terrestrial vegetation. As such, when the terrestrial vegetation is removed, soil quality is degraded. Further soil depletion is caused by soil erosion.

Another negative effect that occurs as a result of clearing lands is dryland salinity. Dryland salinity occurs when salts move to the land surface through groundwater. This process has many adverse effects on plant productivity and the health of water bodies such as streams and rivers. When dryland salinity occurs on a massive scale, it may render the land to be unsuitable for crop production.

Change in climate is another negative results of vegetation removal. Greenhouse effect is increased while rainfall levels are reduced when vegetation is removed. It is because of these negative effects that many governments now impose restrictions on how the process is done.
