American students know from a young age that they will have to do well at school if they want to study at any of the better colleges and universities. They also know that they will have to score well in tests specially designed to gauge their readiness for higher education. These tests can literally open or close doors for young people. Luckily, when getting ready for SAT prep Palm Beach FL students have access to some of the best tutors and materials.

The SAT tests were first introduced early in the nineteen twenties. Changes have been made over time but the initial purpose has always remained the same. The test determines whether a youngster has the basic skills and knowledge necessary to successfully complete a higher education program. It is interesting to know that the name of the test is not an acronym at all.

It is true that the tests are not mandatory. In fact, many universities and colleges do not require applicants to submit their test score or to even take the test in the first place. Most of the top universities will not consider new applicants without a good score, however. These universities wish to award their available places to the best of the best, to students that will further contribute to the reputation of the institution.

Serious students vie for a place at a top institution, and with very good reason. Not only will they receive a superior education, but the very fact that a person has graduated from a well regarded university opens doors. Top corporations do most of their recruitment on the campuses of these universities. Promising students receive valuable exposure during their breaks and they are most likely to be offered the best jobs when they graduate.

Students have good reasons to be nervous about sitting for this test. It is strenuous and demanding. Students have to complete three main sections in three hours. The three sections, mathematics, writing skills and critical reading are completed separately and there is a short break between each session. A perfect score would be two thousand five hundred and a rock bottom score would be six hundred.

An entire industry has developed around the tests. Entrepreneurs have developed special study guides, websites offer help and tuition, manuals that guarantee success abounds and private tutors charge a hefty fee for personal tuition. Because a good score is considered to be so important parents and students pay the high charges for these services.

Experts have warned that many books, manuals and study aids on sale contain little more than what is already supplied by the College Board. In fact, most students do not actually need additional aids or resources. When considering such material, , however, it is important to make sure that it will actually be of value.

Students that do not perform as well as they hoped to must keep in mind that they can sit for the test again at a later stage. Experts warn that it is unhealthy to overemphasize the importance of the test and to place students under undue pressure to perform. Many students do poorly at the first attempt because of such pressure.
