The sun is the most natural heater in our universe. The combustion of gases created by the sun warms the earths surface so that even when it's cold, the heat that radiates from it warms you. The objects that are warmed release heat into the air and make it warmer.

This type of heating is a godsend for industrial businesses that operate in large, open space warehouses. Many of these businesses resort to forced air heaters that are built into the ceilings of their facilities and blow hot air at the rate of a jet engine. This can work for some businesses, but it is inefficient and expensive. Infrared heating is up to fifty percent more efficient than forced air.

There are two types of infrared heating. One is low intensity. The other is high intensity. High intensity systems have been around for almost 75 years. They operate with exposed flames and require high mounting. Reflectors are used to direct the source of the heat. Forced air can be a suitable heating solution for small shops that are not vented and don't have many workers.

This works well in an area where there aren't many workers and the area is not vented. Low intensity heating replicates the sun by generating radiant heat. This heater is usually suspended from ceilings by chains and are under the control of a thermostat.

The low intensity heating systems have enclosed flames. To create heat, a burner box ignites a gas and air mixture. A fan forces this mixture through tubing. The tubes release energy that reflectors direct onto the floor. This type of system begins at the floor level instead of the ceiling level to create warmth.

If you have a forced heat system, the heat will escape each time a door is opened. When that happens the system must start all over to heat the space. With infrared heat, the heat that comes from the floor acts like a reservoir. It will retain extra heat and continues to warm the space until the heat that was lost from the door opening is negligible.

There are many benefits from this type of heating, not the least of which is the cost savings. This type of heater is up to fifty percent more cost effective than the forced air variety. They are cleaner and quieter and don't blow dust and debris around like the ones that rely on blowers. These heaters have zoned capabilities that can function as a unit or independently.

There are safety considerations to be taken into account when using this heater. You have to keep certain objects at a safe distance from the heaters when they have lower temperature ratings. It is important to shield certain items like lighting, gas and electrical lines, and parked cars.
