CNC routers are designed to have base tables. This holds the stock being worked upon. Normally, the stock is held intact so as to limit movement during work. Different machines come with different sizes of base tables.

Most modern routers are gantry style. This means that they are designed with an overhead gantry that moves back and forth on a pair of rails. The rails are usually placed on either side of the bed. The spindle that holds the cutting bit moves right and left on the gantry.
