Livestock fencing is an important investment on any farm because it confines animals into spaces while preventing entrance by unwanted animals such as wildlife. The animal that needs to be caged will often determine the kind of fencing to be installed. The market has a variety of products to pick from. When one is in need for fences for livestock San Luis Obispo offers a good place to consider visiting.

Most of the fences on the market are suitable for a variety of farm animals. However, one still needs to be careful in their choice of a fence to avoid spending money on a structure that will not do the required job. For instance, it would be a waste of resources to build a chicken fence for cattle and vice versa. Chicken wire should be used to confine poultry and other small stock while cattle and horses are best served with cattle panels.

For goat keepers, it is worth noting that goats are very notorious animals, and will spend most of their time testing the fence for weakness. Once they find a weakness, they will crawl under, walk through, jump over, climb up, or crawl through a fence. For such animals, the fence should be tall enough and deep enough into the ground to prevent them from jumping over or crawling under.

The spacing between the wires making up the fence should be tight and close enough to prevent goats from getting their heads through. The wires need to be close enough because once a goat gets its head through the fence, it is likely to get the entire body through too. Sheep are not as notorious as goats at testing fencing. However, they are the same in size, which makes it necessary to use the same fencing as for goats on them.

Pigs usually escape from confinement by digging and crawling under it. They are not good at jumping like goats. The ability to dig makes it necessary to make the fencing deep enough where they cannot reach in their digging efforts. They may also chew through the material if it is not hard enough. As such, the materials used to make the fencing should be hard plastic, metal or other hard materials.

Horses are more notorious at jumping over fencing and exploiting weakness in gate latches than they are known for crawling below the fence. Their attempts to get through fencing is also limited when compared to other animals. However, stallions can be more aggressive when they are on heat. Therefore, the fencing needs to be made tall, sturdy, and strong enough to keep breeding horses inside.

Fencing options are many and diverse, which presents one with a variety of options. Major examples of fencing options available are temporary electric fencing, wooden horse railing or wooden boards, barbed wire fencing, iron railing fencing, iron panel fencing, and paige wire. The price and suitability of a certain fencing option varies from one application to another.

Fencing can be a permanent structure. This makes it necessary to obtain a land survey of the land one intends to fence. This process may take some time, hence one should start early enough.
