An investigator often refers to anyone who works privately to investigate or obtain information related to crimes and civil wrong doings. Individuals seeking positions in any of these areas must complete all training exercises to receive licensing and registration.

To obtain this type license in Washington, individuals must complete all eligibility requirements in the time provided. After which, the applicant must also pass a state exam. Once this process is complete, the exam results, documentation and history will be reviewed before licensing and registration can be issued. In situations where an individual has a criminal record, there are often forms associated with reporting past criminal history which can be obtained from the agency.

Other requirements include being a United States born or naturalized citizen. The applicant must also be 18 years of age or older before filing an application and taking the state exam. Before taking the exam, individuals need to verify that all applications are accurate and complete before paying any fees and completing the exam. For, while fees are nominal, most are non-refundable.

The training requirements often include approximately sixty hours of ongoing intense training. In some cases, where one has obtained training as a security guard in the past or is a current officer of the law, some entry level training may be waived. Once having gone through this training, the individual must then complete a training outline and training officers course which are available online.

Once all training is complete, the individual must then submit the application and all documentation to the supporting service. If the individual owns, operates or plans on carrying a firearm, there may be additional documents required. To determine if this is the case, inquire at the time of acquiring the information packet. Otherwise, the application could be denied, thus requiring an additional application process and fees.
