The distributors help take the product to territories where the manufacturer cannot physically set up due to high cost of production. In doing this they help the manufacturers sell the product and the consumers of the products to acquire it.

They help you market your products to all the locals and they make sure it catches on when it gets there in order to continue making profits from your products. They can even be a tool to help your products sell globally.

They use this data to try and estimate the future consumption of certain products but now they started using this data to get the manufacturers to produce goods that suite the customers needs. This means that they are a very important link and have the ability to help in quality improvement.
