While our lives come with no guarantee of happiness or fulfillment, developing certain attributes can help to put us on the right path. Honesty is one of these. Be honest, firstly with yourself and then with others around you. Do not just go along with what others expect of you. You will start understanding how to start living life to the fullest when you are completely honest about who you are and what you want.

Without self acceptance, you will constantly live to please others. You need to leave the past behind, stop fretting about the future, and be fully open to the present. The failures of the past can haunt you to the extent that the present moments slip past unnoticed. Fears for the future or even a constant focus on future plans also mean the present is not fully experienced.

It is important to remain flexible. Changes are inevitable and learning to flow with these instead of constantly trying to resist them, opens you up to new possibilities. Take advantage of every unexpected opportunity that arises. Challenge your comfort zones and you will find you are stretched and enriched. You can start small, simply by taking a new route to work or going to a different restaurant. This will give you courage to make bigger and bigger changes.

Many individuals find that the more complicated their lives become, the less fulfilled they feel. Sometimes working towards simplifying the situation can help to bring clarity. Perhaps you need to sell some of your possessions, or cut down on your work commitments. Perhaps you need to set aside time for simple, meaningful activities with your children.

Deciding what is really important to you is halfway towards creating this. You can immediately start pruning away at anything that does not contribute towards what is meaningful to you. Being flexible does not mean that you should not have goals. However, these goals need to be your goals, not those of others. When you accomplish goals that are meaningful to you, you have a true sense of fulfillment.

Illness is something all of us experience at one time or other in our lives. However, we need to do what we can to prevent the illnesses that come from not taking care of ourselves properly. Overindulging, playing too hard and even working too hard can all have disastrous effects on our health. We need to eat well, exercise and sleep enough. This allows our bodies to be the best they can be so we can take full advantage of what life has to offer.

When we choose to live selfishly, we deny ourselves the joy that comes from sharing our lives with those who matter to us. This sharing can bring the greatest sense of fulfillment. Let loved ones in, give them your attention and time, be unselfish and you will experience the rich reward.

We do not know what the future holds for us. The best that we can do is face every challenge that comes boldly, grab every new opportunity and be as honest with ourselves and others as we can be. In the process, we need to cultivate considerate and loving relationships, leave behind negativity and savor each moment of the journey.
