What is the difference between sea shipments, land transport and air freight? There are numerous variations. Yet, one thing is obvious. For centuries, it has been the most common and consistent method of shipping across all continents. The shipping industry has progressed due to growth of technology. The major advantage of sea freight is that big vessels can haul equally large volumes of products to almost any destination in the world.

Obtain proposals and quotations only from trustworthy freight providers. Almost all companies are willing to send estimates online so clients can make a comparison of costs and terms of services. Choose cargo transporters with a positive image in this industry. You can ask for references from business colleagues, brokers and other reliable sources. Rates are determined bases on measurements in cubic meters. Terminal must be paid once your merchandise arrives at the port of destination.

Sea transport has a distinct benefit. Containers can hold huge quantities of products unlike cargo airplanes with limited capacity. On the other hand, land transportation also has smaller volume and restricted access in terms of transportation routes. Besides, goods conveyed by several trucks can be carried by just one vessel in a single journey. This is cost-savings for the shipper.

In most cases, pick-ups are done during business hours from Monday till Friday. The driver will call you before the it collects the consignment. After one day, the company sends booking details, invoice and payment advice. Financial obligations must be settled prior to departure through credit card or Internet banking. You can call the shipper's agent before arrival for instructions. Contact details are seen on your Bill of Lading.

Domestic charges are paid to the agent for unloading, container stripping and warehouse storage. Costs vary according to destinations and may be higher because of security issues. It is often the consignee's responsibility to make arrangements for customs clearances. All personal effects are tax-free. If possible, outsource clearing processes to the shipping firm's legitimate agent. However, it is possible to choose agents who offer these services in various ports of call.

All items must be packed properly to avoid unnecessary damages. Seal the cartons well and read all requirements for packing carefully. Use of pallets means additional fees. Consignments are not insured automatically. There is always a maximum liability for the shipping company. Review conditions for liability coverage and separate transportation insurance policies carefully.
