Maintaining New York Arrest Records is the task given to the state's Department of Corrections. The department is obliged to accept requests for the files because they are considered as part of the public domain. However, the department also has the right to not accept requests if the proper method is not followed and if the requirements are not met. Many citizens, especially those who perform background checks on other individuals, exercise their right to get the files because of amount of vital information they can get from it.

Arrests are recorded even if they do not lead to an imprisonment. Some of the information you can find on an arrest record include the name of the arrested person, age, address, nature of the crime, date and place where it was committed, and the name of the arresting officer.

To start a search, secure the proper request form at the Department of Corrections and supply the required pieces of information. Make sure that the information you are providing are accurate because it will play a vital role in the success or failure of your search. There are certain fees that you need to pay for every request that you place, which you can pay via money order or with a certified check. All fees are non-refundable.

It is allowed to acquire your own arrest document in the New York. If you spot any error on your document, you can send a request to the Department of corrections to inspect it and make the appropriate corrections. It is also allowed to acquire the documents of other people but the process is not as easy as acquiring your own. Law enforcers, lawyers, landlords and employers are given the right to access the documents of other people. You can also check the criminal background of a future spouse. If you are not any of the aforementioned people, you need to have a valid reason for wanting to acquire the documents. If the department is not satisfied with your reason, they have the right to reject your request.

Another source for arrest files are online search tools. There are those that authorized by the government to keep the files and supply them to whoever places a request for them. There are many of such search tools, but, unfortunately, there are also search tools that claim to be legit when they are really not. Prior to making a decision on which search tool to use, run a history check on them. Collect as much information as you can about them until you get sold to the idea that they are indeed legit providers of the files.

There are two types of service providers: fee based and free service providers. Fee-based service providers can provide you with an extensive version of arrest records for a certain fee. You may even get your hands on pieces of information that are considered confidential. Free service providers can allow you to perform a Free Arrest Records Search. You will most likely be provided with the basic pieces of information regarding an arrest. You can start a search by providing the full name of a person. Of course, it will help a great deal if you can provide additional information.
