Getting into a prestigious college or university is not easy. Every year, these schools have thousands and thousands of students applying for a limited number of places. Learning how to get into ivy league colleges is about being organized and knowing what steps to take along the way.

Besides having good grades, you need to score well on the SAT. Most students take their first SAT in sophomore year or earlier. Do not wait until the end of your junior year to take the exam. If you get a low score, you can consider getting a coach, using study books or signing up for a prep course before you take the exam again.

In ninth grade, they must pay special attention to their GPA and take the most challenging courses they can handle. If the school offers AP courses, they should enroll in them. Now is the time to do well in academics and extracurricular activities.

Volunteering and doing community service is also important. So is doing well in the SAT exam. It is a good idea for students to take the SAT in the spring of their sophomore year. They should also work on sharpening their writing and vocabulary skills. Some students find it helpful to read books from various college reading lists.

Many parents hire special counselors or admissions coaches who claim to be able to increase the chances of getting their child accepted. Many of these counselors are former admissions administrators at Ivy League schools, so they may have some insider knowledge that families can use. However, every child and every application is different.

A good guidance counselor can be a useful advocate for college admissions. An experienced counselor at a competitive high school will often build relationships with Ivy League admissions officers. Sometimes the counselor may provide useful information about a student to assist them in getting into one of these prestigious colleges. However, they cannot promise that a student will always be accepted.

If you are a parent that believes that a private counselor is a good idea, make sure that whomever you choose is a member of a valid counseling association, such as the Independent Educational Consultants Association or the National Association for College Admissions Counseling. Also, make sure that you choose someone who will work to find the best fit for your son or daughter, and not simply push a particular school for its reputation.

You must also remember that all of the Ivy League schools charge very high tuition fees. This is because they are private institutions. However, not every qualified student in Stamford, CT can afford these high fees. This is why it is also important to learn as much as you can about the financial aid packages that each school offers. Do this research as soon as possible.
